Advertisers Expected to Spend More on Online Ads Than Print in 2012

This year is expected to be the first year in U.S. history that online ad spending will exceed print magazine and newspaper ad spending, according to an eMarketer study.

Online ad spending is predicted to reach nearly $40 billion in 2012, which is a growth of 23% from 2011.  Print spending is expected to suffer as a result and should decrease about 6.7% to $33.8 billion.  Meanwhile, TV ads should remain relatively unaffected and continue to grow, although at a slower rate than online ads.

This is further proof that advertisers recognize the internet as a valuable tool to reach consumers, and they are investing a greater share of their dollars online as a result.  The implications of this for social media marketing are huge.  Social networking sites can be a key player in online advertising through tools like Facebook Ads and Sponsored Stories.  Also expect to see more marketers using exclusive fan offers and other similar promotions as a form of online advertising.

While some of these online advertising bucks will be going towards more traditional forms of marketing such as banners on websites, there is also guaranteed to be a boost in the money going towards social marketing.  Where are your brand’s advertising dollars going this year?
