Why Your Brand Should Consider Tumblr for Social Media Marketing

Generally overshadowed by larger social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, Tumblr is an often-underrated form of social media with huge marketing potential.  It received almost 92 million visitors last month and users make over 40 million posts per day.  Tumblr is a microblogging site that doubles as a social networking site.  Like a blog, it lets you effortlessly share content including text, photos, quotes, links, and videos, but it has the same principles of a social networking site in that it connects people of similar interests by allowing you to follow pages, chat, and comment on, like, or share content that other people have posted.  Here’s why your brand should consider using Tumblr as part of your social media marketing campaign:

1) It’s growing- According to ComScore, Tumblr’s worldwide audience increased 172% between October 2010 and October 2011.  That makes it the second fastest growing social network in the world, second only to Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

2) Users spend more time on the site- ComScore also found that users averaged spending 147.1 minutes on Tumblr in November of 2011.  While that’s less time than they spent on Facebook, it’s more than they spent on Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and MySpace combined.

3) Easily syncs up with other social media sites- You can link your Tumblr to other social networking sites so that posts automatically update to your Facebook brand page and Twitter account.  You can also set it up so posts you make to YouTube or other blogging sites like WordPress or Blogger will also post to your Tumblr page.

4) Google Analytics- Tumblr is integrated with Google Analytics, so you can easily monitor what keywords do or don’t work, what people like about your blog, and what blogs people find most interesting.

5) Anyone can view your posts- Each Tumblr page gets its own URL, which means somebody doesn’t have to be a member of Tumblr in order to view your posts, allowing you to reach a larger audience. Plus, it’s search engine friendly to attract more traffic.

6) The “reblog” button- This is Tumblr’s version of a share button.  It allows a “meme” (a Tumblrism for concepts and ideas) to go viral.  Thanks to the reblog button, your content can be quickly shared across thousands of blogs and reach a huge number of people.

It might seem like an underdog right now, but Tumblr is growing quickly and has a lot to offer companies looking to market their brand online.  Has your business set up a Tumblr page yet?

I love Tumblr as much as the next guy and I can see how its features can easily be used by Internet marketers to further their brands. The problem is that some businesses can’t see these benefits, and it’s gonna take a while before they think it’s worth the effort and investment to use.
